I was pleasantly surprised at some very positive design changes in Southern Living's October issue. They definitely have a fresher looks with better typography, cute graphics, and clearer photography. All in all, they've modernized the look and the content. They have lots of interesting columns which you can see in this video

Here are some of my favs from the issue:


A new "Done in a Day" column, which features DIY decorating projects you can complete in a day. For instructions for the Family Command Center, click here.


They review Southern artists and shops, such as the Wildflower Cafe & Country Store in Alabama, and the Cochrans of Wood Studio, also in Alabama, who made this gorgeous rocker.


An example of the great new styling and photography you'll find - I love this last picture with the console and the white chair!

I promise all my posts from Spain won't be of Spain, but right now it's still fun to explore what they like and how they live- one of these homes is actually in South America. What do you think?

Love the high ceiling and the super dreamy bed.

From Spain, with a bit of jet lag, my love, and a blank sketchbook

Well guys, I've made it safely to Segovia and to my boyfriend. It is a charming town! I can't wait to do more exploring - and I'll be sure to update you with photos. I still feel a little out of it, as I didn't really sleep well on the plane, and the 6 hour time difference is, well, a big difference. Here's a picture of Segovia:

Along with taking photos, I hope to do some sketching - as I haven't drawn for years. It probably will not go well - but atleast I have a cute new sketchbook! Which reminds me that I wanted to thank Johan from Archie Grand for sending it to me. I'd heard of them before and was aware of their bright colors and titles such as "Socialites I met and liked," or "Bosses I had and liked." I received a lovely green, "Designers I met and liked" notebook. There is nothing like a blank sketchbook. You always want it's contents to be better than the last - which makes the first page full of pressure and possibility. I tend to bring my book everywhere either to jot down ideas, names, places, or sketch something that inspires me so I can look back on it. I'm excited that my new book will start in Segovia!

My last post from the states for the next month - I'm off to Madrid!

Hi guys - so I'm sitting in the Newark airport waiting to get on my flight to Madrid - and then a bus to Segovia - where I'll be collected by my wonderful boyfriend who was sweet enough to go to Madrid and take pictures through the bus station and send them to me so I'd know exactly where to go! So I'll be back to posting tomorrow afternoon - from Spain!

I received word of John Reeves's really unique furniture and I thought it was worth sharing. John Reeves is an award-winning UK designer. He does furniture for all occasions and rooms, even outdoor pieces. REEVESdesign also includes the new Cast Aluminum Series 1 - which I think would be a good option for those of you who want something that no one else in the neighborhood has.

Here's some cool information about the designer:

"John Reeves, founder of a small furniture manufacturing company that bears his name, dealt with the concerns of poor offshore working conditions by moving to Vietnam and starting a fabrication shop in person, building some fantastic, durable furniture along the way. The chairs, tables and benches he produces with his Vietnamese co-workers are cast in aluminum sourced from recycled engine blocks and conduit, and the results are curvaceous, solid and thoroughly modern."

So, I'm really happy to hear that John promotes proper working conditions and the use of recycled materials. Without further ado, his work:




I think the pieces above are really cool. They have an organic, earthy look, but are modern and cast aluminum!
gotta love this bench



I also really like this console - I think it would be really striking in a room with pieces in different styles.

Nothing like puppies for a smile on your face

So, in light of my sad news, Linda in AZ * suggested that I post some recent pictures of Remi, my parent's Australian shepherd, to put a smile on our faces. Here are some pics.

Remi hanging out with granddad as he husks corn earlier in the summer.

Remi wishes he could be in two places at once - and it's often tough for him to decide if he wants to stay inside of stay outside. He decided to nap while figuring it out.

Remi also has a wonky ear that never fell back down after teething - it cracks me up - we call it his "comb-over"


...and the ridiculously cute puppy version of Remi!
